Beagle Health Guide

Typical lifespan: 12-15 years

Beagles are friendly, curious scent hounds known for their excellent noses, merry personalities, and distinctive bay. They are sturdy, compact dogs that make wonderful family pets but require patient training due to their independent, scent-driven nature.

Beagles are generally healthy dogs with good longevity for their size. Their biggest health challenges tend to be related to their love of food (obesity) and their long, floppy ears (infections).

With proper weight management, regular exercise, and preventive care, Beagles are robust companions that remain playful and energetic throughout their lives.

Common health conditions

Obesity

Beagles are extremely food-motivated and prone to weight gain. Obesity exacerbates joint, heart, and respiratory issues.

Ear Infections

Long, floppy ears trap moisture and reduce air circulation, creating ideal conditions for bacterial and yeast infections.

Epilepsy

Idiopathic epilepsy is relatively common in Beagles. Usually manageable with anti-seizure medication.

Hypothyroidism

Underactive thyroid causing weight gain, lethargy, and skin problems. Managed with daily medication.

Intervertebral Disc Disease

Their long backs make them susceptible to disc problems causing back pain or paralysis.

Cherry Eye

Prolapse of the third eyelid gland. Usually requires surgical correction.

Preventive care checklist

  • Strict portion control — Beagles will eat anything and everything
  • Weekly ear cleaning and inspection for signs of infection
  • Annual thyroid screening blood test
  • Regular dental cleanings
  • Maintain healthy weight to protect spine and joints
  • Annual eye exams
  • Secure fencing — Beagles will follow their nose and escape

Nutrition

Weight management is the most important health factor for Beagles. Measure all meals, limit treats to training, and never free-feed. A healthy Beagle should have a visible waist. Use puzzle feeders to slow eating and provide mental stimulation. High-fiber foods can help them feel full on fewer calories.

Exercise needs

Beagles need 1-1.5 hours of daily exercise. They were bred for endurance hunting and have excellent stamina. Long walks and scent games are ideal — hide treats for them to find. Always keep on leash or in a fenced area as they will follow interesting scents with total disregard for commands. Nose work and tracking activities provide excellent mental and physical outlets.
