Poodle Health Guide

Typical lifespan: Standard 10-13 years, Miniature 12-15 years, Toy 14-18 years

Poodles are one of the most intelligent dog breeds, coming in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. They are generally healthy dogs with longer lifespans than many breeds, especially the smaller varieties.

Their hypoallergenic, continuously growing coat requires regular professional grooming but produces less dander than many breeds, making them popular with allergy sufferers. Their intelligence makes them highly trainable but also means they need mental stimulation.

Poodles are athletic dogs that excel in various activities including obedience, agility, and even dock diving for Standards. With proper care, they are long-lived, healthy companions.

Common health conditions

Addison's Disease

Adrenal gland insufficiency causing lethargy, vomiting, and collapse. Requires lifelong medication but is manageable once diagnosed.

Bloat (GDV)

Standard Poodles are at risk due to their deep chest. Feed smaller meals and avoid vigorous exercise after eating.

Hip Dysplasia

Primarily affects Standard Poodles. OFA hip testing recommended for breeding dogs.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy

Inherited eye disease causing blindness. DNA testing available. Annual eye exams recommended.

Epilepsy

Idiopathic epilepsy occurs in all three sizes. Usually manageable with anti-seizure medication.

Luxating Patella

Kneecap slips out of position, more common in Miniature and Toy varieties. Can range from mild to requiring surgery.

Preventive care checklist

  • Addison's disease screening if showing signs of lethargy or GI issues
  • Annual eye exams for PRA detection
  • Hip evaluation for Standard Poodles
  • Professional grooming every 4-6 weeks
  • Regular dental care — especially important for Miniature and Toy varieties
  • Annual blood panel to check adrenal function
  • Knee evaluation for Miniature and Toy Poodles

Nutrition

Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for their size variety. Standard Poodles may need large breed formulas, while Toy Poodles need small breed formulas with smaller kibble sizes. All Poodles benefit from omega-3 fatty acids for coat health. Monitor portions to maintain ideal weight.

Exercise needs

Standards need 1-2 hours of vigorous daily exercise. Miniatures need 45-60 minutes. Toys need 30-45 minutes but are surprisingly energetic. All sizes excel at and enjoy learning tricks, agility, and obedience work. Swimming is excellent exercise for all Poodle sizes.
