Can dogs eat grapes?

Grapes and raisins are extremely toxic to dogs and can cause acute kidney failure. Even a small amount can be dangerous — there is no known safe dose.

Grapes and raisins are among the most dangerous foods for dogs. The exact toxic substance has not been definitively identified, though recent research suggests tartaric acid may be responsible.

What makes grapes particularly dangerous is that there is no predictable safe dose. Some dogs have become seriously ill after eating just a few grapes, while others have eaten larger quantities with fewer symptoms. Because of this unpredictability, any grape or raisin ingestion should be treated as a potential emergency.

This toxicity applies to all varieties — red, green, seedless, organic, and commercially grown. It also applies to raisins, currants, and grape juice.

Symptoms if ingested

  • Vomiting within hours of ingestion
  • Loss of appetite and lethargy
  • Abdominal pain and decreased urination
  • Kidney failure within 24-72 hours
  • Can be fatal without treatment

What to do

This is a veterinary emergency. Contact your vet or an emergency animal hospital immediately. If ingestion occurred within the last 2 hours, your vet will likely induce vomiting and administer activated charcoal. IV fluids and kidney monitoring will be needed for 48-72 hours.

Safe alternatives

  • Blueberries
  • Watermelon (seedless, no rind)
  • Strawberries
  • Banana slices
  • Apple slices (no seeds or core)
