Can dogs eat peanut butter?
Most peanut butter is safe for dogs, but you MUST check the label for xylitol (birch sugar), which is deadly to dogs. Choose plain, unsweetened varieties.
Peanut butter is a beloved treat for dogs and can be a great source of protein and healthy fats. However, it comes with an important caveat: some brands contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is extremely toxic to dogs.
Always read the ingredient label carefully before giving peanut butter to your dog. Look for xylitol, birch sugar, or any sugar alcohols. Choose brands with simple ingredients — ideally just peanuts and maybe salt.
Even xylitol-free peanut butter should be given in moderation due to its high calorie and fat content. A tablespoon for a medium-sized dog is a reasonable portion. Avoid peanut butter with added sugar, chocolate, or other flavorings.
