Dog Not Eating — Vet or Wait?
A healthy adult dog skipping one meal is rarely cause for alarm, but a dog that refuses food for 24+ hours or shows other symptoms needs veterinary evaluation.
Go to the vet now
- Has not eaten anything for more than 24 hours
- Refusing food AND water
- Vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy along with food refusal
- Known ingestion of a foreign object or toxic substance
- Puppy under 6 months refusing food for more than 12 hours
OK to wait & monitor
- Skipped one meal but still drinking water and acting normal
- Seems picky but will eat treats or high-value foods
- Recently vaccinated — appetite may decrease for 1-2 days
- Hot weather causing temporary decreased appetite
Home care tips
- 1Try warming food slightly to enhance the smell
- 2Offer a small amount of a different protein or add low-sodium broth
- 3Remove food after 15 minutes and try again at the next mealtime
- 4Ensure feeding area is quiet and free from stressors
- 5Check for dental issues — red gums, bad breath, or loose teeth
When to escalate
If your dog has not eaten for more than 24 hours, is also refusing water, has other symptoms like vomiting or lethargy, or is a young puppy or senior dog, schedule a vet visit.
